In a spirited push to uplift rural communities, the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD) and Sarawak Skills have joined hands to bring new opportunities right to the doorsteps of the people of Lingga, Sri Aman.

Over the past two days, 95 participants from farmers to retirees, homemakers to single mothers, and even fresh school leavers immersed themselves in hands-on training through four short-term courses: Basic Hydroponic Cultivation using Nutrient Film Technique (NFT), Basic Bread, Bun, and Pastry Making, Basic Electrical Wiring, and Jewellery Making (Ceramics).

Funded under MEITD’s special grant, the programme was designed to open doors for participants to learn new skills or polish the ones they already have.

Speaking at the closing ceremony, Dato Sri Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Sarawak, congratulated all participants, noting that the programme reflects Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, a roadmap to create a skilled, competitive workforce and a high-income state by 2030.

“We’re not just teaching skills; we’re building confidence, inspiring entrepreneurship, and creating pathways to better livelihoods. Whether it’s a small business, a new career, or simply the joy of learning, every skill gained today is an opportunity for tomorrow.” He said.

The initiative also supports Sarawak’s goal for 20% of STPM graduates to pursue Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) under PCDS 2030. This, combined with soft skills training, helps participants stay competitive in a fast-changing job market.

For many attendees, the programme was more than just a course it was a turning point. From cultivating hydroponic vegetables for income, to starting a home-based bakery, or even creating unique handcrafted jewellery, the possibilities are now within reach.

As the event wrapped up with certificate presentations, the mood was one of excitement and optimism. The collaboration between MEITD and Sarawak Skills has once again proven that when training meets opportunity, communities thrive.

Also present were The Honourable Datuk Francis Harden Hollis, Deputy Minister for Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Sarawak, Tuan Haji Adana bin Haji Jed, Permanent Secretary for Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development, Sarawak, Tuan Frank Lani, Lingga District Officer, and Ms. Amy Francis Najur, Deputy Executive Director for Corporate Services Division, Sarawak Skills.
