To support the transformation of Sarawak’s key economic sectors, the Sarawak
Skills Group of Learning Institutions (Sarawak Skills) will be offering an
‘Underground Utility Detection Operation Course’ in June 2023.

Commenting on the short course, Mr. Mohamad Isham bin Fauzi, Chief
Commercial Officer (Strategic Engagement and Business Development),
Sarawak Skills highlighted, “Registration is ongoing for the five-day
‘Underground Utility Detection Operation Course’. The course will be held at
Sarawak Skills Tabuan Jaya, Kuching from 12 to 16 June 2023. For HRD Corp
registered employers, the course fee is HRD Corp claimable.” He added, “We
have received numerous requests from the various industry sectors to offer the
‘Underground Utility Detection Operation Course’ in Kuching. This is due to
the increasing number, and complexity of infrastructure projects in Sarawak
which require accurate and timely identification of underground utilities to
prevent damage and ensure public safety during the various phases of
infrastructure development. The rise in urbanization has led to a surge in
underground utility installations, making it more critical than ever to have
trained and competent personnel who can detect and map these underground
utilities before the commencement of construction works.”

Mr. Mohamad Isham emphasized, “The course is designed by industry experts
to boost industry-relevant knowledge and skills for those involved in
infrastructure development, namely site supervisors, project managers,
engineers, architects and land surveyors. In summary, the course introduces
participants to the underground utilities industry, industry best practices,
including the use of electromagnetic locators and cable/pipe locators, use of
other accessories to enhance locating ability, Ground Penetration Radar (GPR),
and Gyro Orientation Measurement Unit (OMU) As-built Mapper. Indeed, upon
completion of the course, the participants will be able to use the knowledge and
skills gained to carry out underground utility detection and mapping
effectively.”
