The Sarawak Skills Development Centre (PPKS) Miri Branch was launched on May 29, 2007. The new regional office in Miri caters to the communities in Sarawak’s northern region, offering programs for school leavers and skills enhancement training for industrial workers. Currently, this centre offers Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) in Mechatronics, Industrial Electronics, Electrical Technician, Computer Systems, and Office Management. Moreover, Diploma Kemahiran Malaysia (DKM) is also offered in Mechatronics and Industrial Electronics. In 2015, PPKS Miri introduced the Vocational Training Officer (VTO) course for SKM and DKM graduates. To date, these courses have been identified as critical for industries in Miri, such as the vibrant oil and gas industry and the palm oil industry.
Since its inception in January 2007, Sarawak Skills Miri has been organizing skills upgrading programs for the current workforce, specifically targeting the industrial sector in the state. This aligns with the centre’s mission to upgrade the skills of the workforce in Sarawak. The centre has been appointed as one of the authorized training centres under the SME Corp. Malaysia Training, where eligible SMEs sending their staff for training at Sarawak Skills can utilize up to 80% of the training fund for course fees.
The centre’s objective is to develop learning capabilities and motivate the local workforce to engage in continuous training by providing effective and efficient learning in all programs. As the business environment changes, Sarawak Skills ensures that its role as a training provider remains relevant to business needs while playing an active and effective role in contributing to the development of human resources in Sarawak.
Sarawak Skills will continue to strive to introduce more courses for the benefit of the public, private sectors, and the community at large, keeping abreast of technological advancements to balance skilled labour supply with the rapid industrialization that the state is experiencing now and in the future.
