Balingian\/Batang Ai, Sarawak \u2013 November 2025<\/em><\/p>


The Handicraft Development Programme, a collaborative initiative between Sarawak Skills and Sarawak Energy Berhad, reflects both organisations\u2019 commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through community-based empowerment and sustainable craftsmanship.<\/p>

The programme was first implemented in Balingian from 5\u20137 November 2025, and later extended to Batang Ai from 11\u201313 November 2025, involving a total of 40 participants representing 15 longhouses. All participants are local weaving practitioners dedicated to preserving and revitalising traditional skills.<\/p>

This initiative aims to enhance and diversify traditional weaving products, moving beyond conventional mats to develop handbags, laptop sleeves, wallets, pouches, and clutches that appeal to modern markets. Participants were exposed to contemporary design trends, product branding strategies, and market development knowledge to help them elevate product quality, reach new market segments, and sustain long-term livelihoods.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Aligned with SDG 12: Responsible Consumption and Production, the programme emphasises the use of sustainable and locally sourced materials such as rattan, bamboo, and bemban. These renewable natural resources promote environmentally responsible practices while preserving local biodiversity and reducing dependency on synthetic materials.<\/p>

From a social and economic development perspective (SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth), the programme empowers local communities, particularly women, through skills enhancement and entrepreneurship development. It supports the creation of sustainable income opportunities while preserving the cultural heritage and craftsmanship traditions that are integral to Sarawak\u2019s identity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

During the three-day sessions, participants demonstrated remarkable progress, producing handcrafted products with a combined estimated market value of RM12,000 from both Balingian and Batang Ai. This outcome highlights the commercial potential and economic sustainability of locally made handicrafts when supported by the right training and market exposure.<\/p>

The collaboration also demonstrates strong institutional partnership and governance in line with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, where Sarawak Skills and Sarawak Energy work together to strengthen rural development through transparent, inclusive, and impactful community initiatives.<\/p>

Through this initiative, both organisations reaffirm their commitment to inclusive growth, environmental sustainability, and cultural preservation, contributing directly to Sarawak\u2019s journey toward achieving the UN Sustainable Development Goals and building resilient, empowered rural communities.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
